Time for more updates!
Installed an ethanol sensor with an arduino controller ... turns out the ECU doesn't support flex, but I might want to in future, and it's nice to have the data.
Picked up a Radium jet pump to deal with the extra flow of the 460 - Tell you what, doing fuel right is expensive as hell. If I was starting again, I would immediately go for a medium size lift pump to a surge tank with a walbro in it.
This is a CANable - nice little unit that integrates to the pi. Deciding to move to CAN to talk between the stuff I put in the car was one of the best decisions, although I wish I'd made it earlier, the design is a bit weird in places because of it. I can also understand why everything in cars now is CAN.
Et Voila!
Down to springy for a tune....
They installed the jet pump, drilled a hole in the bucket (it was sucking the bucket dry), but sadly couldn't make much power - Suspected a blocked cat, but it wasn't blocked.
I got it back, and I could tell immediately that something was weird - the wastegates started opening at 5psi, which is super obnoxious in traffic. I did some testing and clamped the wastegate line.
After doing this the wastegates opened at ... 10psi. Maximum boost is 16. Clearly the spring in at least one of the wastegates has failed.
Time to burn some money:
Twin GFB EX38 wastegates with added 5psi springs (comes with 10psi).
Old vs new
The old ones, one of them clearly has a weak spring, so the diagnosis is solid. I haven't yet installed the new ones, so we'll have to come back to this.
While I was there, I spotted the cause of yet another oil leak that was being masked by an earlier oil leak (the AVCS gears AND the AVCS actuator) - the cam sensor.
Same as the AVCS actuator - simple age and heat from the exhaust have killed the O ring.
My chinese android head unit expired after a brown out issue, which was unfortunate, so I took advantage of boxing day sales to grab this from SCA:
Make up the harness, and do a few adjustments:
It works well! But when I installed it, It still had the earth whine I had put down to the old head unit, so I went hunting with a spare cable.
The earth on the amp was crappy! I took the bolt out, cleaned it up with the brass bristle wheel on the grinder and cleaned off the paint nicely where it sits, reinstalled it all, no whine!
Bonus picture of the phone holder I normally have in the car, which is super handy.
The Cam sensor O ring is not a normal size, isn't available seperately from subaru, and the part by itself is about $100. It's also the christmas break right now, so I went to bursons, pirtek, and then AB seals, who were closed, but should have what I need. I will clean it up and refit, and go back in the new year for new O rings (I'll get a bunch and do both exhaust sensors - I think it's the same size as the AVCS actuators too.).
I'll also get the wastegates on soon, Test drive it a bit and get some logs, then we'll be ready for a tune where (hopefully) nothing breaks/is broken and I can finally make decent power.
