Looks like auto owners need to budget for a box rebuild as soon as they start making some power

Just like manuals need to budget for a better clutch when they start making power.

The other thing is the lack of line pressure on stock auto to hold the clutch "in", with so much more power going through, which is why it would normally just slip.

Normally you'd want to get the VB mod done at above 200kwatw, to get enough line pressure in there, then the stock clutch packs can hold some serious power.

Owen as Mick said, but I'll throw in E85 too (even though I was still on the base map). I was hitting 1 bar at 3,000RPM with the E85 map while the 98RON map wasn't hitting 1 bar until just over 3,500RPM.
It was really odd as when I put my foot down in 5th (manual mode), it didn't slip like it used to. Or rather normally would. I slipped a bit, but only to about 3,500. Normally if have expected it to slip the way I tried accelerating fairly wildly thus not actually applying torque to the ground. This didn't happen.

I think that with the recent launches I've done (last week at Willowbank and perhaps one or ten more on the street in the past few weeks), I have severely weakened the diff gears. And probably a few other components too.

I was really needing the stomp on the brakes AND use the park brake and REALLY feather the clutch to hold it between 3,000 and 3,500 on 'stall up'. Thinking about it today (pretty much all I've done is think about this debacle), I think perhaps I've had a growing issue somewhere as, unlike what I have experienced in other autos, it wouldn't naturally hold a stall up point (if that makes sense??). I had to feather the throttle to do this.

In any case, it's not exactly a new box either. I ticked over 258,000 just before it failed.

Oh well. It is just one of those things I guess. You muck around long enough and something's bound to give.

Speaking of giving, it's confirmed, centre diff looks much like J's (only without the after market brass bushes)...

(^plenty more where this lot of remnants came from^)

I've decided on a complete "new" gearbox (i.e. A working second hand one). I unfortunately don't have the ability to build one right now (though this will come), and I'm worried that the carnage of the diff will work it's way into the main part of the box through the ATF. I just can't take that risk.

I'll certainly treat the new box a little more kindly, but I don't plan on winding back the power. I think a stock box with my setup will be plenty able to handle it. Just one that's slightly less worn and abused.

I want to say thanks to Mick for the help and offer of a new gearbox. Hugely appreciated!

Cheers
Sean..

New box in. Boost leak somewhere. Great but shit.

I'm pretty sure the BOV gasket is leaking. Or the turbo inlet. But it'll be an easy fix I'm sure.

Ok so the leak isn't the BOV gasket.
That means it's time to check throttle body hose, turbo inlet and the y-pipe.
Shit. Not what I was wanting to do

Oh..bought a Perrin turbo inlet for LGT; I'm hoping it fits the STi donk :|

So I've had the replacement box in for a week and it hasn't been smooth sailing. On Sunday arvo it started fking up by not shifting to the higher gears (usually got to 2nd sometimes 3rd then that was it) unless I tapped into Neutral, foot off the accelerator and cruised for 5-10s then back into D. Then it would kick into 4th or 5th depending on speed.
This problem came on suddenly: I drove for about 30 mins (mostly highway) to a mates place and things were fine. Left about 2hrs later and it was all FKD.

Had it looked at today and after about an hour of random diagnosis testing, stall ups, driving and smelling the ATF, the gearbox guru suggested it was an electrical fault. In particular, a fault in the link of the throttle angle sensor to the TCU.

I checked and cleaned all the corresponding plugs, found a piss-poor earth cable between the chassis and the pitch stop mount on the box and fixed that, and put it all back together.

And then things seemed all ok.

Until I pulled into the driveway; a sharp metallic "tink, tink, tink" as the back left wheel cocked (full tripod mode yo!)

So, it seems the box (probably???) is FKD.
