Member Profile - Down Under (Brembos coming soon!)

Postby DownUnder » Wed Oct 16, 2013 7:52 pm

Here's progress on my car so far. A lot was posted on the one day but some of it I wrote like it was the day I did it. Sorry for any confusion. As far as mods go my thoughts are keeping it clean and stealth as possible. I'll only be satisfied if I can do a professional grade job. Anything that screams backyard job is not my cup of tea. I like pictures myself so I've included heaps of them in here. Any questions feel free to ask :)

Genuine slimline weathershields

Mods in progress:
BREMBOS! - shit they cost alot but I'm going to paint them and it should look mint
Steering wheel with steering wheel controls - Bought!
Re-trim steering wheel, gaiter, handbrake boot and glovebox lid in black leather with red stitch - from redlinegoods.com - Bought!
Custom fit full MDF sub box for rear left quarter
Install Alpine type-R into said box
Install Hertz HDP-4
Install Type-R door speakers
Custom switch box using blank switch spots below mirror adjuster

Possible future mods:
A little bit lower:

- Probably STi pink springs with saggy bum spacers
- I have considered coilovers but I want to keep it legal as possible.
Move dual range selector and 3d print 2x cupholders
3d print bolt on mesh grill for pre fl lib (possibly plastidip grille in the meantime)
3d print custom centre caps for the wheels
polish and change colour of subaru badges
STi master cylinder and booster
Smoked tail lights! - Hanabi's or Valenti's can't justify the price right now but may impulse buy...

Hope you enjoy :) I sure do!

Received some goodies from whiteline. You gotta love having a wagon. Fits with so much ease! :)

Anti-lift kit and rear swaybar. Bought from the MRT ebay shop. Was way cheaper than using whiteline's website.

Installed the anti-lift kit (front lower control arm - rear bush). Took about 3 hours total (was slowed down by rain). Really happy with how this changed my suspension. Previously it was a little bit sloppy and the bushes were shagged. Can feel the change this has given in turn in, even though it's subtle.

See first post for my walkthrough. :)

This honestly has to be one of my favourite mods. Changing from the stock lib plastic pedals to some nice metal ones from a GD WRX. Swapping was easy (maybe took 10mins) and they just feel better under your feet as well as looking awesome. The advantage of getting used over new was I got the heel rest as well which doesn't come with new sets.

Semi-car related. Bought a nice soldering iron for myself. I was using a really old (was my grandpa's) wooden handled one that took forever to heat up and it was to bulky for the surface mount electronics I'm getting into. This should enable me to build lots of custom circuits for all sorts of purposes.

So I've decided I want brembo's. There's just something about them that makes me want them! So yes, it's probably overkill but I'm buying them for aesthetics as well. I blame cruisn :P

Bought some rears as they came up for an awesome price within a local subaru group. It was all downhill from there. Something awesome that I realised was that I got a brake analysis from the RAA when they did a pre-sale inspection on my car. It has %difference for all values (side to side, front to back) as well as force and deceleration achieved. Once I get them on I'll take it back there so we can see how much % improvement there really is!

I was on uni holidays in Darwin without my car, I can't seem to stop modding though! :D

I did some custom fabrication on my brother's bullbar. Previously it had a large opening for an incandescent unit. I welded in a plate to make a whole the right side for these LED parker/indicators
I also converted his entire interior from dull orange lighting to bright blue by re-soldering heaps of surface mount LED's. Lucky I bought that new Iron :)
We also bought some polarised film off ebay. We then proceeded to peel the old film off the LCD's and stuck the new film on with a 90 degree rotation. This meant the screen went from black text, colour background to coloured text, black background. It's wayyy more classy. :)

(my brothers car again.)

Watch out kids! This is what happens when you run too much current through an earth wire... Scary stuff

It's the wiring for his trailer plug. He used a dodgy trailer.

So this happened:

The bulb holder broke and the previous owner use tape to hold the globe in. Of course the glue on the tape melted and the bulb went through the holder. Subaru quoted me $724 for a new headlight and wouldn't sell the internals separately. Then I got quoted $350 by a wreckers so I called another wreckers which sold me a light with broken mounts for $30. Such a score compared to subaru.

To get to that I had to do this:

So I thought: screw it, while I've got the lights out and apart I might as well put in angel eyes  The process took a while. This was mainly due to making custom brackets for the CCFL ballasts (as well as the ballasts for some hks180 5000k HID's). My OCD really kicked in on this one.

Fitting the brackets

Then I went really legit.

Final result: So very happy. The biggest problem with this mod is I don't get to see it enough! I need to drive by more reflective surfaces :D

Seeing as brembo's were happening I started sourcing more parts.

I went to a local dedicated brake shop and got them to make me some ~13mm thick shoes. The guy then shaped them using his 190mm template so that they'll go straight onto an STi drum. He wasn't actually to happy making them but I'm convinced that they're strong enough. This step actually saved me a fair bit as adapter rotors and made to order so it's hard to get a discount on them.

A moment of truth happened!!! Some front brembo's came up cheap (really cheap) and I bought them straight up. This was when having brembo's became a reality to me. Before that is was always "I could just sell all this for a profit"
They need new seals and helicoils in one side but I can justify that for the price I got these for.

They need re-painting of course
