It'll be interesting to see if it steams a lot on startup after sitting that long, that was the most noticeable thing about my hg issue.

Aaaaahhhh ok I will watch for it ....!!

So.

Started my car this morning from being parked since friday arvo.....

No steam, infact nothing really at all.!! Little bit of condensation in the exhaust tips.

I also did the oil cap test. No smoke at all.!!

Oil level was a little low, but nothing to worry about as its due for a change anyway.

But im still getting bubling in the over flow bottle at that is a little low in the header tank after beeing filled last thursday.

SERIOUSLY..... WTF.!!!

So i got a coolant system pressure test and.......

Not holding pressure.!! Did it 4 or 5 times to make sure but it just kept loosing pressure. There is no visable coolant anywhere so its leaking internally.!!! Bye bye head gasket!!

So where is the water going? if you did that test a few times then water would be in the cylinders and if you started it it would have hydraulic locked for a split second or been hard to start! did this happen? I prefer to pull plugs out to do these tests so you don't bend a rod!! if its not in the combustion chamber then has your oil level changed? or gone oil gone milky? or is there water pooling anywhere? only other thing is the pressure leaking out of the tester which can happen!

My head gasket issue is only minor at this stage and my car would be showing ALOT more of the symptoms of lifted heads if it was worse. So it wont hydraulically lock with the size of my leak!

My wife has agreed to fix the head gasket .... IF.... There is not other damage. She is ok with dropping around the $3k mark but wants some assuranced that the $3k wont turn into $10k when we open the motor.!!

So a leak down is booked in for monday to try and determine if its just a head gasket or something more sinister.!!

School me on something, Dan

Lets say (hopefully not) that hypothetically it is something else and requires full build

When you advertise it for sale, you will be hard pressed to find a buyer with a blown motor

I dare say you will not get much

I would much rather sink 5k into it to repair to a good standard and keep it for a couple / few more years

The amortization of the 5k over 3 years is nothing to pay for certainty of a sound motor. As if you sell and buy something else outside of warranty, there is no guarantee of being safe

And the $5k you spend on the lib will be less than the money you will lose if you sold it with a blown motor

Hope you don't have to go there but just saying

Yes you are correct!!

But im not showing any signs yet, some bubbling in the over flow bottle. So i would only trade it in, as i could never sell it to someone privately!! And the dealers aint gunna spot some bubbling in the overflow

I know its a bit of a dog act, trading it in for someone else to fix. But we are saving to buy a house and we are not gunna spend $10k on a rebuild.!!

Ive got it booked in on monday for a leak down test to see how bad or good the motor is.!!

Wife wants more info before sinking $3k into the motor to only find that its done a ring and it goes from $3-$10k. Cause if im gunna build it, im gunna BUILD it and not just slap some forged pistons in it and be done with it.

Hope this makes sense .!!!

Could also be the heater core leaking coolant into the interior? Got a wet passenger floor?
