MY12 STi steering wheel install in MY07 GT-B

Postby bigBADbenny » Sun Oct 21, 2012 8:21 pm

I recently put out a WTB on this forum, Rexnet and Impreza WRX Club for a DAMD or PROVA steering wheel to replace my very tired, scratched and shiny stock GT-B tiller. Providence came through, and I was offered a wheel with only 5000 K's from an MY12 STi. Of course, the owner had upgraded to a DAMD...

Since I had the negative off the battery for another job today, I was ready to go!

I used the various how-to's on Nasioc, which I'd read and re-read till I knew the process and pitfalls backwards. Doing the swap took less than an hour, even with removing the steering wheel a second time to recheck the alignment. That last bit is the crux of the matter, when next I do it, I'll attach the tape used to realign the steering wheel AFTER I crack the main nut that holds the wheel on. This tape goes from the steering wheels rear cover to the steering column cover. I put it on in three strips, then cut it at the join between the covers, all at different angles to help with realignment on the splines. I put the tape on before I cracked the nut, cracking it obviously will move the wheel a little, which makes realignment harder. Read the how-to's and take care with everything especially the nut, the wiring, the alignment and the clockspring.

Old wheel, worn, scratched, munted, not really the first thing you want to see when getting in:

We're committed here, the nut is off, I'm about to gently hammer the wheel with my fists at 3 and 9 o'clock to loosen it on the splines:

Oh yeah! This goodness is MINT!!! Anyone got a matching gear knob? :P

So now I have a spare postFL wheel - useful for a core swap or re-covering project.
I really recommend this mod, it's easy, fun and makes a massive psychological difference to the driving experience. :D

Nice stuff :)
I don't suppose you have the buttons and centre part from the STi wheel? ;) The silver buttons look really out of place on the tbSTi lib and the darker STi ones would match the rest of the trim much better!

@ cruisn:Thanks for the encouragement, cobber!
OEM goodness FTW...

@ Daniel: As for the buttons, you'd have to hunt down a set or a complete wheel from an STi owner gone full track!
I'll let you know if I spot any

Cheers, Simon!
Yeah I'd be tempted by those smaller diameter wheels just for the slight increase in steering effort, but the expense involved would almost cover the cost of a legit 2.0 quickrack conversion! I'll keep an eye out for a preFL wheel for you.

Oh yeah, stay ahhh... tuned for more umm... cross model OEM mods :good:

Yeah the preFL STi airbags are nice with the small round logo.

Actually...

I just did the research around that very question on behalf of Coyote, who has a BRZ...
(single stage preFL steering wheel type, in some respects: INFO UNCONFIRMED)

The main sticking point compatibility-wise is the clockspring keyholes are in different positions.
You'd have to either swap clocksprings (research retro-compatibility) or fill and re-drill the holes.

Then there is the question of whether preFL airbag modules would bolt into the postFL horn-pad, and you'd want to consider if that was even a desirable thing to do, as the airbags could deploy differently between generations.

In other words, you'd be better off putting an aftermarket or stock BRZ wheel in and losing the SWC's... (INFO UNCONFIRMED)
Or go any single stage or aftermarket OEM STi or WRX wheels...

I'd get a BRZ just to roll with THIS!

If i was to get a GRB/GRF/Post FL steering wheel, i'd go all the way with the steering wheel, horn cover and probably hack up the SWC so i could keep them.

But, that's all too much of a mind f*** for me and I might just have to stick with my original plan :? of the STi horn cover that I found, and spend some coin on a DAMD steering wheel 8)
