Map light mod - part 1

Postby jakey » Tue Mar 12, 2013 4:05 pm

In preparation for some new Map lights I have coming, and leading up to the Map Light/ Dome light fade mod, I Decided to give this one a crack, thanks to Leo for inspiration: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=6153

1) Un-clip the map-light cover like so
Image
2) Seperate the two parts, which is easy enough to work out
3) Drill 4 holes on the inside corners, this will help when cutting from the other side
Image
4) Cut some guide lines with a knife and a ruler on the other side, this will give you something to follow with your dremel
Image
5) Start butchering
Image
6) Clean up the edges, reassemble the two-part cover, replace and enjoy!

You'll regret this later, I had to take some out as it got two bright without making the whole bigger!

Be careful, you're looking at $1,000 plus if you screw up. I spent a few hours doing it because I didn't trust the tutorials so started from scratch :P

But if you do do it, tap it in after the switch for the dome light. Mine's wired up so I can't turn it off. Gets annoying when you want it dark in the car.

Yeah yeah I am aware of the risks, I am pretty confident I have read the instructions well.

Where would you suggest tapping the switch?

Good :) Just be careful, the wiring in the Subaru book is actually wrong (well it was for my car). Hence why I checked everything myself for my model.

I'd solder onto the terminal for the dome light bulb, well that's my plan when I can be bothered fixing it up.

Yeah,

With stock bulbs it's a massive improvement, but I've got some LED panels in the mail and i'm going to link the dome and map lights together for door fade.

Chances are it will be too bright, but only time will tell!

Lip install!

Postby jakey » Sun Mar 24, 2013 10:22 pm

Decided not to go through with the map light door mod, despite stocking up on gear to do so - this is because just the dome light is so BRIGHT there is no need for the maps to be on as well.

Lip install!
Being a preface 3.0 there is no direct fit lips that I know of, so this is the PU one with slight gaps each side of the middle. I don't think it is very noticeable at all.
Used a fair few self tapping screws straight on to the bar, rather than the supplied bolts. This thing is not coming off :assassin:

Over all I am really, really happy!

Going to try it with this badge on soon, bit indecisive though...

I don't think the badge looks too bad Jake but is it blue or greeny blue I can't tell? and having that lip on your car is a good upgrade in the looks department 8)

Thanks Chris,

The color is blue, a bit lighter than the proper badge background though.

I might stick it on for shits and giggles tomorrow and see how it sits with me
