You thinking about one of those rising sun 2.5 bottom ends?
I am seriously considering one, with some stupid garret (35r). My only concern would be how long the 5 speed would last.
Good luck with the ecu though mate.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

Thanks Ian.

No im actually thinking of another short block setup potentially forged rods, pistons, arp top and bottom studs \ bolts, and keeping the 2871r i just bought for now (until i decide to go a little crazy and a little bigger - thinking gt3082R or thereabouts) - if i do this i would be going for some big power - closer to 300kwatw. If not then i wont bother.

But one step at a time - looking to sort ecu out first then will start building the said motor over the next 3 months or so

Hoping to have car back by end of next week

Lol nah theyre all still light mods

I'll change title once it's gutted, running a tech inspected 18 point roll cage, sequential box with billet shafts, floating hubs, sealed block with billet crank, big compression, motec ecu, Cnc ported heads with 290 degree cams, methanol fuel and 45psi of boost.

Been pricing up a built motor to suit 350-400rwk (700hp at the fly!)

Cost will be about 15k in head and block work, excluding cost of bolt on ancillaries like turbo, fuel setup etc.

Few other options to get close to 300rwkw look like costing around the 8-9k mark, without turbo and fuel system and tune. Then you have the problem ofgearbox. 6 speed will hold up to it for sure with a nice Jim berry clutch.

My favourite / bang for buck choice at moment seems to be a forged stroker built to handle 280-290rwkw and this will cost about 8k without ancillaries and bolt ons.

Will be thinking about this soon as I get my car back. Have about eight excel spreadsheets juxtaposed at the moment which is confusing the hell out of me - too much choice. And you have to draw the line somewhere with the subi cos it def costs almost double to make 300+rwkw in a boxer setup than in most other 4 cylinders.

As a comparison - my gemi makes almost 500rwhp an cost me just over 10k in motor and bolt ons

Fantastic, great to see more built gen 4 libs floating about! Totally under representated out there.

Yep building a suby ain't cheap to build and make big hp, should of got a 2jz supra alongside the Gem.

Anyhow I'm considering my next project too. ;)

Hey, I have one of those, a MKIII with a 2j in it. Well, the 2j is gone now, and I am currently figuring out what to do with it, turbo 1uz with an auto is looking good at the moment. I fear for my liberty, i suspect I will be buying another daily driver some time this year as the wagon slips down the slope.
But I would imagine you would be able to come in a little under your budget their dr20t. Though it is nice to see people with a realistic idea of costing.

1uz twin turbo sounds awesome!

I might sneak in just under that budget but I'd rather set it higher than lower. Although if anything it'll be in the hundreds lower not thousands especially if you wanna do it right. Skimp out on anything in these highly strung setups and expect them to go bang. The major cost in trying to crack 300+kw atw is in the heads, and getting these to flow this sort of power will cost at least 5000 with an appropriate set of cams.

Realistically I think I'll be chasing 280-290awkw as this will make it am animal daily, capable of running mid 11s and handle like a go kart with the right mods. Anything more than that gets stupidly expensive for not much practical street use.

Unless I win lotto then things might change :)

Will post details of the planne setup later.

Postby dr20t » Sun Jan 15, 2012 9:46 pm

Ok unfortunately still no car or results

Ecu is still in the states being unbricked. Wont be here for at least another four or five days.

In the meantime ive picked up\ordered the following in anticipation of car being finished soon:

- TCP quad tip stainless mufflers (version 2 without the droopy passenger side)
- CF front grille
- Rota Torque 18x8 in gunmettalic (on order)
- Ku31 Kumho 225x40x18 (on order)
- AV Double Din fascia panel (on order)
- Ultrex front lip sti replica
- JDM spec ABS \ Battery engine bay covers

Thats about it.

I have however finalised my engine \ gearbox build wish list which im hoping to start over the coming 3-6 months (bonus permitting lol)

And here it is with some indicative pricing from my research so far (pending refinement and suggestions guys):

Bottom End
- Used EJ257 Semi close deck Block (bottom end only - looking to source for under $500)
- Will be machined for close-decking, sleeving and tunnel bored ($2,200 in machining work and sleves)
- Block acid dipped and cleaned with new welsh plugs etc - $200
- Block machined to accept 14mm headstuds - $250
- Custom CP Pistons with reduced side skirt height to suit custom rods - $800
- Custom Rods looking for 82mm to increase stroke to 2.6 litres - $750
- Regrind, Linish and check crank for truance and bearing clearances - $300
- ARP Rod Bolts (price included in rods)
- ARP Main case studs - $350
- ACL Race Series big end and main bearings - $180
- Balance entire rotating assembly including flywheel \ pressure plate - $300

Heads (Using standard 2.0 litre GT heads or version 8 wrx sti heads if I can get them for under $500 a pair)
- Full reco using standard valves, 3 angle valve job, new 60-80lb valve springs, retainers, porting to flow close to 300cfm at 28", plus machining to accept
14mm head studs - $3,600
- GSC S2 \ Tomei Quad AVCS Cams - $1,200
- PBMS 14mm headstuds - $300

Other Engine Related

- Full Subaru OEM Gasket Kit $350
- Cometic 1.0mm headgaskets - $120
- Brand new 12mm Sti oil pump - $200
- Brand new water pump - $100
- Timing Kit including new belt, tensioners and balancers - $250
- Tomei 2 piece Baffle - $350
- Morosso 7L Sump and Pickup - $650
- GTX3586 ball bearing billet turbo 0.70 A.R with 4" inlet, 0.86 rear split pulse housing- $2,000 delivered OR Precision Turbo 6762\6765 $1,800
- Oil and water lines to turbo - $250
- Modify intercooler piping to suit twist mount - $200
- Custom radiator overflow to suit liberty cooling system (due to twist mount)- $150
- Custom Twin Scroll Up-pipe to suit new turbo (mated to twin scroll headers)- $350
- Custom 4" silicon inlet to suit existing CAI setup (currently 3 to 5 inch)- $150
- Modifying exhaust to suit new twist mount and wastegate setup - $200
- Alloy Radiator - $500
- 044 Fuel pump in boot fed by lifter pump from tank(walbro 255lph), including surge tank, new lines and wiring $500
- Miscellaneous gaskets \ plugs \ belts\ bits - $500

no upgrade required to current 1000cc injectors (yet)

SUB TOTAL SO FAR $17,750 (plus or minus $1,000 depending on whether you need to purchase block or other heads)

Driveline\Brakes

- 6MT from sti including driveshafts and r180 diff - $5,000
- Group N transmission mounts - $150
- Misc bits to fit - $500
- New clutch - $800-$1,000
- Brakes - $2000

$8,450 to $8,650

Tuning
- Retune - $1200-1800 depending on dyno time to get this right using E85

TOTAL COST: $28,200

Now that is alot of dosh to spend on a car that will probably only be worth about 30k once done

plus the cost to date of about the same

And without factoring in the cost of an aftermarket engine management if the 32bit subaru one cant cope (which it should but who knows) - so add another 3k there if not

hmmm

Pros:

- Will make over 350kw atw guaranteed
- Will practically shit on 99% of cars on the road and track (unless dedicated race cars) and be a pleasure to drive
- Will put a massive smile on anyone's face
- Will be original (dont see too many libs at this level)
- Will run at least low eleven if not low 10 second quarter miles reliably
- Will handle like a go kart and reliably make good power and track fun

Cons:
- Cost
- Cost
- Stress
- Cost
- Swearing alot

Thoughts???

Guys pls remember this is a bit of a wish list for now and work on progress.

It may end up being that I do something a little more tame than that for the time being. But will see how it pans out.

For now just really want my car back it's been nine weeks gone
