RE the Valve Mody mod, im interested in this too, but I heard yanks were having issues with it on their Subys.
Apparently, the Subaru TCU learns about the VB mod and softens the shifts again by regulating the line pressure.
What we need to do it tune the TCU, due to lack of demand this will be a dream. Unless the Japs have something already.

In theory its a good mod, along with a tranny cooler. Interested to hear your thoughts on the mod over time, (PM me if you prefer).
Its something I need to look into, if i want to turn up the wick in my car.

Cheers...

I hear that Phat GT is importing a VB from US as part of an auto rebuild. Will be good to see how that is progressing and if he has arrived at similar conclusions.

so if anyone was curious and too lazy to do the maths (and if my calculations are correct) its roughly 273.6 kW at the engine.

Yes, I know. You should see the stupid grin on my face when I use my right foot? And the sound is also rather special! I must post a sound thread when I get back from Tassie.

The auto box is definitely the weakest link. It cannot handle the torque and the change points are all wrong for the current state of tune. I understand some people in the USA are working on the Transmission Control Unit mapping for the 5EAT gearbox. Along with the Valve Body upgrade, must have some TCU changes in order to get the benefit of the torque from 3500 to 6000. No point going out to 6800 before changing as the engine bounces off the redline (cutout).

On the Water to Air Intercooler, I am not tracking the car, and as it is my daily driver, I do not need max power/torque on tap at all times, so not sure whether to proceed. There are two schools of thought - higher intake air temps while engine water temps remain normal, can actually improve fuel economy. I guess one would have to tune for this scenario. The other school of thought is that high air intake temp suck power from the engine. While that is true, I rarely need power when I have high air intake temps as I always expeience that condition in start/stop traffic.

I will put my pennies into a second hand box rebuild and try to tap into the TCU tuning before I spend any more on obtaining more power.

I have also re-learned how to drive an auto with the high torque and TCU shift points as they are:

1. Run the revs up to 5,500
2. Lift off the throttle (almost 1 full second)
3. Full throttle again and she's away!!!
4. Thru 2nd and into 3rd.

And before you ask, I have not had it anywhere near 5,500 rpm in 3rd!!! Just lift off and cruise.

Latest Update:

Brakes - I have decided on DBA Street series slotted rotor with the Dixcel M pads and retaining the stock calipers. Happening over the next month, due to DBA being out of stock of slotted street rears in the standard size.

I am also looking to have my rotors re-painted as they have a "corrosive" finish at the moment (call it rust if you must!). My brake guy tells me that it illegal to paint the rotors, so looking for suggestions on how to do this legally and with what paint (has to have heat dispersal, high temp rating and flame resistant).

DBA rotors have black hats from the factory as do oem Subaru and Brembo rotors.

Just get some VHT caliper and rotor matt black, tape out the disc face and just paint the hats again.

Hey Mark,
If you haven't purchased your rotors yet, hit up Dan at ART for a price. He is a mate of mine, mention I sent you and he'll look after you.

Serge,

Thanks for the tip, but already ordered. BTW, DBA have stopped making the Street Series Slotted 2650SL and 2650SR and now make a bi-directional slotted 2650S (groove cut in both directions) so I am getting both front and rear with the same bi-directional pattern, 2650S fronts and 653S rears.
