Partly! Subaru only fitted the the main element and did not fit the oiled foam (Against their rules). I did ask them to fit what they felt comfortable with, and they did just that. Anyway, they echoed your advice and HPF advice to be wary of water due to the location. I have the filter that was removed and it looks pristine inside with some dirty spot on the outside, but eminently cleanable and re-useable for next time. No damage and wearing well after 20K kms.

Also had them remove the lower engine bay cover and will start logging temps again. Seems a little noisier this morning in the concrete car park, but barely noticeable.

Looking for a volunteer to fit the oiled foam sock for me, while I sip coffee and watch! (Chaotic2050 perhaps?)

Edit: Also, STI@Docklands gave the engine a clean bill of health with no adverse signs of wear or tear after 20K kms of SC. I got them to check the Trasco Oil filter element (one of my earlier mods) and the also the magnetic sump plug when changing the oil, and nothing abnormal to report.

Mark I have a box of those trasco filters in my garage, you can have it if you want.
I was supposed to give them back to Ivan like, 10 months ago but never got round to it after all the screwing around with that filter on my car which doesn't fit.

Did a full lap of Tassie in November last year, plus the usual 30K per year to and from work alone, plus a trip in the country side at least once a month, so all normal for me.

Hi MH,

Long term follower of this thread and I was hoping you would post some extra feedback on the VB mod.

Have you run into the problems reported by the US Suby guys or is this a US problem only? (i.e. the TCU learning about the VB mod).

Also who did you get to do your VB mod?

Cheers.

Hi illuzn.

The TCU has effectively "learned" the VB change and still holds the gears too long. The engine revs to redline much quicker and the TCU does not recognise that it needs to change. Result is, if I were to hold my foot hard on the pedal, then the engine cutout would activate for about 1 second before the gear change occurs and you loose a lot of torque to the wheels at that moment. Manual shifting is a little better, but still no where near what is needed. What we need, is Tuner who can access the TCU and re-map the shift points (around 5500 rpm for WOT would be my first guess) and the shift timing. If you know someone, would love to talk with them.

I had the VB mod done through HPF at South Dandenong, but they sent it to an Autotransmission specialist just up the road from them in Amberley Cres.

They also suggest that I should have stronger clutch packs installed, potentially a high stall torque converter as well as the VB mod and TCU tune. Would be nice to get a 2nd hand transmission and just rebuild it completely I would think (my long term plan).

Simon,

Sorry, but I missed your request in amoung the other responses. I am getting a few things done, a Whiteline rear camber kit, the DBA rotors, and supplying my own pads (Dixcel type M from PhatGT), plus new tyres and full 4 wheel alignment and "tuning" of the rear camber to suit the slightly lower stance. I think the rotors and fitting were about $850~ish.

I use Pedders at South Melbourne (Reade) to do all my brakes and suspension stuff.

Re: Project Veloci

Postby MH3.0R » Sat Feb 11, 2012 7:20 pm

I decided this week to rid my car of the 19x8 wheels and Kuhmo 225/35ZR19 tyres. After having them on the car for a year and the tyres were up for replacement, I wanted a quieter tyre of the same size and I really like the Bridgestone's, due to their wet and dry performance. Well, at the prices I was offered, I did not want to spend, so back to the stock wheels, re-shod with Bridgestone RE002 215/45R17.

I will sell the four 19x8's. I will post a thread in the For Sale section when I get some photos.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I have a strong preference to have all 5 wheels the same and I have been waiting for over a year and the supplier is still not able to get it for me despite several assurances that it was "on the next ship". I hate the idea of a different wheel as a spare and would find it very hard to actually fit it to the car if I needed to.

Why would it be harder to fit to the car than any other wheel?

I agree, it's not good to be running different sized wheels, however whenever I get a flat I'm pretty much straight to the nearest place to get it sorted. Plus I wouldn't be driving at high speeds with the spare on either.

All your points are very valid and it makes a lot of economic sense, but it is just one of my personal idiosyncratic "can never do" regardless of how little or how slow I have to go. So brand me a "5 wheeler" oddity as opposed to the greater and very sensible and economic "4 wheeler" community.

Anyway, back to stock wheels for the next year or two until I have to get new rubber. May consider at that time to go to an 18x 7.5 or 18x8 as long as I can fit then completely inside the guards (especially at the front) and that they do not attract the wrong attention. I do be liking the TSW Nurburgring as they are close to my preferred style but not sure if TSW do our 5x100 PCD stud pattern

dont worry mark, im the same. i have to have a full size spare.

there was a wrx, very nice looking, driving around back home. had aftermarket wheels put on, they suited the car, then he went round the roundabout and one of his back wheels was a space saver... it just wasnt to be.

plus, different size wheels mess with your diff, or something along the lines, dont they?

Simon,

Well there are at least two of us in the 5 wheeler club! I recall when I originally bought the Liberty, I was looking at the WRX, but space saver spare caused me to instantly reject the car. Same with the current model Liberty, spacesaver! WTF! :angry2:

Anyway, I may have to bite my lip one day as these are becoming popular options for manufacturer's in the chase for lighter vehicles and fuel economy, but while I have a choice, I will remain a 5 wheeler!

The difference in circumference of the wheel/tyre combo will cause some additional wear in the Diffs, but it depends on the magnitude of the difference and the speed/distance combination. In my case the difference was:

Original 19x8, 225/35R19, +55 offset
Diameter 625.3mm 640.1mm
Circumference 1964.4mm 2010.9mm
Poke 33.9mm 56.6mm
Inset 143.9mm 146.6mm
Speedo error 0% -2.31%
Reading at 30mph 30mph 29.31mph
Reading at 60mph 60mph 58.61mph
Ride height gain 0mm 7.4mm
Arch gap loss 0mm 7.4mm

The source of this data was : http://www.willtheyfit.com, a good reference check supplied originally by PhatGT (I think).
