After the exhaust mods, I have been getting some vibration through the cabin, mostly on WOT. About two weeks ago, I took it back to Ivan, up on the hoist. We found all the heat shields (transmission and both rear mufflers) were the source of the noise.

Ivan came up with a good solution. We wrapped some heat resistant cloth around the centre muff and tied it in place with 3 stainless steel tie straps. This isolates any contact with the centre heat shield. Then above the centre heat shield, he put some sound deadening self adhesive thick pitch/tar paper. When I flick the side of the heat shield now, there is no ting, just a dull tuh sound. Inside the cabin, the sound was dramatically reduced. Similar tar/pitch self adhesive paper was applied to the top side of the rear muffler heat shields in strips. So no ting from them either, just a tuh sound.

Getting there slowly, but decision soon on the 3.0 inch centre section. Am considering dropping down to 2.5 or 2.25 if I cannot recover the mid range torque with tuning.

Hey Mark, glad to hear things are working out your way...

I'd like to try putting that adhesive tar paper on my heat shields as well to reduce cabin noise...where can I get some, is it just through exhaust shops?

All recent work and parts has been done and supplied by Ivan at x3emotorsport. All future work, most likely as well.

Finally got to the dyno with Matt today, and none other than Vinny, ex STI fame. Vinny running the car on the dyno and Matt in the pax seat logging and tuning.

Shifting is sorted as long as the TCU/ECU does not unlearn. It was shift well in manual and auto modes with less jarring than I had previously.

However, the dyno power figure is a little lower than I was expecting, but is said to be a tough dyno. For you who are dying to know, the peak kw atw is 167. And torque I think is about 400nm atw. The torque curve starts at 330nm then drops to 300nm before running smoothly up to 400nm at 3500 rpm and maintained all the way to 6000 rpm with slight drop off to 7200 rpm at 360nm.

So if I extrapolate backwards, using a transfer factor of 0.64 (compared to original specs and first dyno) it should now be around 260kw and 625nm at the flywheel.

While the power figure (kw) is not impressive, the torque is quite pleasing and now with the shifts sorted, a nice daily driver! :D

Thanks BBB,

I must qualify the figure as the first dyno session and extrapolation of the original kw/nm (180/298) may not be an accurate way to make any conclusions. And also, the figures quoted from the dynos throughout this build are all from different dynos. Original dyno run by Vinny, before any mods were done. A post sc mod dyno run was done at Springy, and now this one. This was by far the longest dyno session, combined with tuning. I think they ran it up around 15 times with several tweaks of the ECU image loaded.

I'm not sure what to think here.

For the total cost of the mods and the effort to get this car right, the figure to me seems low.

BBB got 168kws on this dyno with a very conservative tune, 11 psi from memory.

Mark I'm sure it's a 'nice daily driver' but given the mods you've installed, was that the goal here?

Were there any reasons why the car didn't get to nearer to 200kws at least? Given Gino's manual car made 237kws with pretty much a similar setup, is the auto box to blame? Or those custom muffs?

I'd really like to know..

Why the necessity for big numbers ?
More or less stock fuel system, no intercooler, daily driver, the list goes on.
I'll bet it's still scintillating to drive ;)

I'm not saying it's not a great drive.

But with the following........

5EAT Valve Body Mod, Clutch packs upgrade, Raptor SC kit, Kido Tune, Raptor Headers, Raptor WTA Intercooler, custom exhaust.

I thought a few more killerwasps would be unleashed.

Unless of course you're talking about your car. Then I agree.... :P

Mufflers are restricting flow significantly but it into perspective, Vin did a Forester S Edition a few days ago that only managed 140kw with TBE + Tune. We actually concentrated on a smooth/flat torque curve rather than outright top end. Variable Valve Lift is the final piece of the puzzle along with a new MAP sensor to finalise the car
