Well, got the sc unit open this morning and these are the sights that presented themselves:

Image
Not much left of the transmission belt!

Image
The main bearing and large pulley will be coming off later today to clean all the crap out of the other side.

Image
A thick coating of the belt residual is deposited on both sides of the transmission housing.

Image
The other side of the housing, not as bad, but still needs a good clean.

Image
The lower air outlet of the transmission housing was completely block, and this is the belt residual that came out of it. The air cooling inlet is also block but further back up the air inlet pipe. That will be cleaned out tomorrow.

This is not going to be cheap, due to the labour costs, about 6 hours in all.

Wasn't the supercharger serviced recently?

Are belts an item that are replaced during service, much the same as a car?

Yes, the sc unit was just very recently serviced but I have no details about what was included in the service and there are no list of issues or items that are to be serviced regularly, so how can one know?

There is no risk of the belt material getting into the intake side of the air flow. The SC transmission and its air supply is completely isolated from the air intake of the engine.

The remains of the shredded belt are captured within the sc unit transmission and the transmission air cooling fan and hose.

Well, the sc unit repairs were completed this morning and it is back on the car and that sweet whistle is back!

Found another issue while the belt fluff was being clean out. One of the new bearings had lost it's seal when the belt let loose, so had to have a new bearing replaced as well.

Will be running it sedately until the weekend to allow the belt to bed in properly. Should have more than 500 kms on the belt by then with a mid week trip to Bendigo.

The pic below is the total amount of belt residual that was recovered from inside the sc transmission housing:

Image

It also shows the bearing that lost it's seal. It was exposed to some of the belt fluff so better to replace it.

Total repair bill is 7 hours of labour plus a belt and a bearing.

Some points to note:
1. Regular inspection of the sc transmission belt is needed, suggested by the guy who did this work (Barry) at least every 3 months. Replace belt if any visible signs of wear or tear. Can be inspected via the top air outlet and rotation of the pulley.
2. Regular inspection of the cooling fan that supplies air to the sc transmission. Noticed that it was not flowing the air too well and was partially blocked.
3. Recommended SC Transmission belt to be replaced annually, from both Tim and Barry.

Still in the dark as to why this belt let go. And unfortunately, it will remain a mystery... :umnik2:

Ok, so now have more than 600 kms since the sc unit was repaired and did a WOT pull today. Still some finer elements in need of Matt's tuning expertise, but otherwise... :D The boost is back!!!!
