Finally got myself a blow by solution today.
I was given strict instructions by my tuner to avoid cheap catch cans as they're apparently useless... especially if the don't have a baffle... so I went with the grimmspeed air oil separator as its a popular choice with other members, and it makes mounting incredibly neat and easy as it just screws into your oil filler neck and replaces the oil filler cap. All hoses go down the side of the intake manifold under under the cooler, so no need to have big chunky hoses running all over the top of the engine bay :good:

Well we should all have one really.
Blow by can result in detonation, and it gets worse as your car gets higher in kms. So it's a necessary safety feature to keep the engine from dying on me.

Ah ok. It's just that I never had Matt mention this to me. I might ask him the question to see if he thinks its necessary for my car.
Cheers

Engine pics please :D

And congrats! I wish we'd see this more often as the first mod on people's turbo cars.

No engine pics yet... hasn't been installed yet
I'll take a pic when done, but I'm guessing it will look exactly like your install.

An AOS or Catch can is an interesting mod really, if you read the American forums its one of the first mods they do because people go on about blow by and how bad it is etc.

But it seems to be a fairly uncommon mod here and not many seem to worry about it

Absolutely. When my lib was stock I had plenty of oil in the tmic, throttlebody, turbo - you name it. Friend's 2011 wrx we worked on recently - after being used to my clean bay, it's unnerving how much oil collects in the pipes.

I think people in the states tend to be more hands on with their mods (many more people documenting welding, boring out heads, exhausts, putting crazy engines on suby drive-trains), while our 'modding culture' is a little less so and more of a bolt-on scene, from what I see anyway. When you start really taking things apart inside the engine bay - you'll realise the need for an AOS system, whether it's a catch or simple separator... :D

Yep you're both right.. it's definitely not a done thing here. Not because people don't want to, just don't realise it's a need. Up Until recently I thought they were only necessary on big powered cars.

Those style ones do seem to get a fair bit of a bashing for feeding moisture and sludge back into the engine. Look at the more expensive ones, quite a few of them have coolant flow going to it too to try evaporate the crap off rather than sending it back in.

Could be just typical internet lies trying to get us buying the top of the line ones though.
