Well, I'm not too sure :? I know my skills are no match for my car (yet). But I didn't lose my friend too much; definitely kept my own through the faster more flowing corners. Through the tighter sections, the lack of weight in the 86 meant I just couldn't keep up. Thankfully the turbo torque helped there

On the bright side, my car rides ever so much more smoothly than a stock 86 when you aren't hammering it. As a general daily driver, I'm certain I have my perfect car :D

DW65C installed yesterday. Along with a new filter.

Wasn't the most fun I've had. But was necessary as the filters were well overdue for a change

Haha did something annoying happen? How did you go with the o rings, did you use 2 or 1?

Yeah something annoying did happen Alexei; I initially forgot the spacer from the stock pump at the top end of the new one so had to undo it all again. Second time taking it all out, one of the lines still had heaps of pressure in it for some reason and fuel spewed out all over the place

Oh well it's done now and good for a few kWs more than stock ;)

Oh no, that would have been a PITA (nearly forgot the spacer too, it looks like it's part of the pump at first). At least you got there in the end.

May I ask how many O rings did you use above the spacer?

Alexei, just one o-ring on top of/above the stock spacer.

Yes Dazzz, you were the pioneer that helped me avoid such catastrophe :P

Oh I got DAMD yesterday, with the help of my son it was installed quite easily

I have the pre-FL auto which had the (IMO, annoying) shift buttons on them.
The audio controls are not directly interchangeable but I'm sure I could make something work, especially with the aftermarket HU.
I do like the clean look though; but to perfect it, I need to clean up the airbag unit.

Have been having issues with fuel being added at idle and removed under load suggesting vac leak of some sort. I've been reluctant to acknowledge it (kind of hoping it would go away  ) but today I hooked up a compressor and homemade boost/vac leak tester jig.

I don FKING know how to embed a video from YouTube on this forum, here's the link

Got it...use Youtube2...for obvious reasons :?

So, it's been a week since FKD inlet was diagnosed.

I picked up a GRB STi one from Kris at Rising Sun (RSS to the rescue yet again! That bastard just knows how to make me hand over money  )
Had my buddy help with the install on Friday night.

Inlet swaps are shit! As those in the know, know... haha

So here's what we found:
Image

Image

So just like the rabbit in Snatch...proper FKD..

GRB STi now is noticeably thinner for some odd reason, but this did make the insertion onto the turbo flange much easier:

Image

Did a leak test (with handy compressor and attachments and stuff) and found the 'O'-ring on the oil filler pipe is rooted also (easy fix that one).
But it also pressurised the oil system and caused my second use crush washer to leak under the pressure :? :? :? (my bad...)
I found this the next morning:

Image

Freaking crapped myself thinking this was another major oil leak, but I could find no oil anywhere (other than on the garage floor) and directly around the sump plug. Phew. Refilled it and off it went.

With a properly working turbo inlet, the LV tables went from this:

to this:

Image

As you can see, the AF Learning corrections for A, B and C rev ranges were better with a non-farked inlet, but the IAM wasn't rising above 0.5625. The car also didn't feel right; better, but not right.
So I emailed Eric (Torqued Performance ;) ) and asked him to clean it up.
Got the base map this morning and things are much better.

There is "lag" but that's how Eric tunes and how I like it (by "lag", I mean a small twin scroll turbo on a 2.0L engine not reaching peak boost of 19 psi until 4,000 RPM in 2nd, and not until 5,000 RPM in 3rd which still gives me roughly 3,000 and 2,000 RPM until gear change for 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th; although redline in 3rd is ~160km/h...so I don't see redline in 3rd ever...well not legally on the roads at least).

Like I said though, only base map so far from perfect. But oh, so much better!

Down side to having Eric tinker with the tune is his preference for a 3 port BCS on autos... Not such a big deal on 99.9999% of other Subaru turbos I'm sure. But on my VF38...it's a "take the turbo inlet out" job

Seriously, why the FK! are the nipples for the compressor housing and waste gate AT THE BOTTOM!?

Image

I'm glad that my new turbo (the VF53 or 56, whatever Kris gets me...when ever he get's it to me...) will have the BCS hose nipples at the top where they bloody well should be!

Anyways, big up date, so the TLDR version:

- FKD inlet now replaced with not-FKD inlet
- Tuning started with Eric
- Don't put a new BCS on a VF38, it's a shit job (Though apparently Matt McL can do it in 6 mins with his "special lube" :? )

Thanks for reading :drinks:
