Is resomat like dynomat?
If so dynamat is a must for all stereos. Makes a big difference!
I think the McIntosh is close to un-amplified after market speakers, but after market speakers come to life when amplified. They handle a lot more power than stock speakers.
But it all comes down to personal taste. I like sound quality not big bass, and the mcintosh has a good go at that but theres too much static from the mcintosh amp for my liking, and its not bright enough for my tastes. But thats just my taste.

Hey don't worry, I have minimal standards for car speakers and even I think the stock sub is crap. Probably won't do anything about it though

+1 on dynamat. Even on a stock stereo it can be the difference between night and day.

I dont know how much resomat weights, but dynamat is 2.2kg per square metre from memory. So to do both sides of all 4 doors properly youre probably looking at close to 12-15kg... its like adding another spare wheel to your car!! So I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking to run their car down the drag strip. Another handy tip, dont dynamat your doors before youve had any door dings/dents removed... they cant do paintless dent removal once its on. Well not from the inside of the doir anyway

IIRC there's a how-to (EDIT) on LGT about adding a port to the wagon sub enclosure to give the stock sub a little more mid and low extension.
Easy enough to try both techniques I guess.

I sealed up the sub enclosure with dynamat on the weekend Ben. I have hundreds of cuts all over my arms and hands to prove it haha

Result was a definte tightness in the bass. Much more defined now, but as a result the bass sounds a touch shallower if that makes sense. But in my opinion a much better sounding bass.

In doing the work I noticed theres a 50c piece sized rubber plug under the lower right corner of the sub (you can see it in my earlier photo). This plug pops out easily and would be perfect if you were after a ported sub enclosure.

Next step is changing the entire system and sub. Ive no doubt the after market sub will be an improvement, but for anyone keeping the mcintosh system, $30 worth of dynamat in the enclosure will be money well spent!

By “sealed up” do you mean you covered the inside of the rear quarter? Did you take any photos!?

Yeah so inside the rear quater there's gaps everywhere which prevent it from being a sealed sub enclosure. The biggest gaps are only about 100mm x 100mm in size and I thought id try close up the gaps with dynamat along with dynamatting the rest of the enclosure. I dont have any photos of the finished product but ill take some when I swap the sub. A lot of doing it by feel as you cant see in there, so theres a lot of overlapping but that doesn't hurt dynamat.

Okay cool thanks. I’ve got the polk sub so it rattles a fair bit in their. Dynamat will definitely help to eliminate those and add to the sound quality i assume!

Ok so i replaced the stereo on the weekend and took a couple of photos of the dynamat in the sub enclosure while i was at it. Please excuse the overlap in the dynamat, the whole job has to be done by feel so its not pretty... also, because its done by feel you end up cutting the sh*t out of yourself on the dynamat countless times... you will notice small bits of dried blood on the dynamat in places

I cant comment on how the McIntosh sub sounds running off a better amp, but i can tell you that my new 8" sub running off a proper amp is about 5 times better than the McIntosh one was. In saying that, it is only an 8" sub so if anyone is after HUGE bass, this is not the way to go for you. You still need to run some bass through the speakers and just use the sub as a filler.

Also, somebody asked me last night what fascia i used. Here are some pics.
Unfortunately you cant buy them in the gloss black finish that the mcintosh comes in... i personally hate the matte plastic finish the fascia comes in but it was a sacrifice i had to make when needing to change the head unit.

I was the one who asked about the facia.

Just watch the sub, im sure its been covered a million times but I had my pannel off inspecting mine while it was on and that steel pannel the sub screws into flexes a hell if alot. More then you think and that was with a stock sub.

Thanks for the tip!
Not much i can do about it flexing though.. might have to leave the cover off so that the membrane of the sub cant touch the cover.
