Finally got my sunroof tinted today ,
10% tint , looks great and now can leave the cover open and not burn the top of my hairless head !!

I spoke to my tinter about this a few weeks ago (been doing it for 15+ years)

He said the reason they crack is because more heat is stored within the glass.. As it is the same glass as the windscreen (2 layers) the top layer gets hotter than the other.. Apparently he applies a reflective layer on the bottom so it evens it out to prevent this.

Sorry about the 2nd hand info (a little bit vague), just what I was told.

Sunroof Tint

Postby sjm69 » Sat Feb 16, 2013 9:01 pm

The tinter who did mine and Nigel's has been doing sunroofs for twenty odd years and has never had one crack that he had done nor has he heard of any cracking from other tinters that he knows so either very lucky or it's myth
Either way I hope I'm not the first, fingers crossed

I got my sunroof tinted in Bundy early January. Quite happy with the job they've done and price.
I'll confirm specs later, but from what I remember, they applied a reflective tint which had a 99% UV rejection, 60% heat and glare reduction and 19% lightness.

That's good news Steve! I can also happily report no cracking...........and my car is never garaged

Out of the 5 tinting places which I enquired with, Tint a Car was the company who was aware of sunroofs cracking - the bloke there said it's because of a lot of sunroofs not being made from glass so they don't go near them, to which I replied, " but mine is glass"... although, being a big franchise who make money from volume sales, and with a "no sunroof" policy, they waved my small sunroof tinting job out the door.

Both my WRX and GTB have tinted sunroofs with no problems. Get it done if you haven't, sucks without!

Thats odd, I was quoted $60 from another tint a car mob in frankston. they seemed pretty happy to do it after i told them it was glass

I can highly recommend the boys at DandS Tint in Lonsdale for those who live in the southern suburbs of SA. They also have a Northern branch for those who live in the North too.

Sunroof Tint

There seems to be too many reasons out there as to why they " crack "and won't tint a sunroof
