I have so many little and big projects lined up for the Lib I lose track...
However this chirpy critter just demanded my attention!

Its the rear accessory v-belt idler pulley.
happy about that because I had thought it was the AC comp on its way out, however letting the once-intermittent noise get worse and testing the various pulleys by touching their bolts with the end of a giant screw driver, revealed the culprit. (thanks for the "tip", Brandon!) Rifling through the WSM didnt reveal a part number, but Google did. I could have ordered online, eBay, anywhere but went to Makin and Luby and settled for genuine full retail, instant gratification.
That is something of a cop-out, the real enthusiast will find a metal idler pulley from an older model and use that, or press new bearings into a metal pulley.
Anyhow, about 15 minutes on the ratchets and all is well again.

Next up is getting my front driveshafts reco-ed/re-packed/re-booted at A1 Driveshafts just around the corner from me.
The inner boots split, so I'm looking into wrapping my dump pipe to mitigate the heat transfer to the driver side boot.
I bought the Company23 subaru driveshaft rollpin punch from Tuspeed, taking advantage of Adam's considerable generosity to also score AVO caster adding offset LCA bushes, currently getting pressed in at Little Sam's Garage, also in Collingwood. Then I'll be ready for my 5000K checkup at TruTrack in North Melbourne.

Keep an eye on my sig/GB's forum as I'm cooking up another sweet deal for those who like to lavish the utmost on their rides ;)

This afternoons fun has come to a temporary halt, whilst one axle nut is loose, the passenger side is bending my 2ft breaker like a popsicle stick. The nut has been de-notched, tapped, tightened, jacked and is now WD soaking.

If anyone has a portable impact wrench that would mean beer!
Luckily I've budgeted all week for getting this done ;)

Sorry no wrench, benny, but basically had the same experience as you today replacing my brakes. 5 year old bolts don't like to be disturbed! Feeling your frustration.

All done thanks to George, the general mechanic operating out of Neilzeds, in my street. Drove it over, jacked it in Neilzeds driveway, removed wheel, George brought out a 3/4 drive breaker and 5 foot extension. Craaaaak, job done. :P

George is sensational value if you need an engine swap etc at a competitive price, he always has at least 3 old bangers on the go.
He and Neil are collaborating on reconditioning the V8 out of a very rare DeTomaso Longchamps at the moment.

This is fun, apparently gt-b 6mt axles don't have roll pins?
The lca is dropped but the axle won't budge from the hub so looking for advice in that. :)

Well the driveshaft, complete with hub and tie rod end is at A1 with both boots getting recoed.
$60 the inner boot, $120 the outer boot, the latter will be done because of my mileage: 185K...

Basically anything with a castle nut or splines I just couldn't budge...
Next time I'll do more research on the tools required.

Even so, if I had bought an inner boot and grease kit, I could have probably DIY'd it solo, assuming the boot would slip over the inner bearings.
But I'm happy to spend a little more for the peace of mind.

Put it all back together tonight, alignment tomorrow.
I'm going to rotate the strut tops, if possible,so the camber tops point in and back, for even more caster, anyone tried that? :D

Schadenfreude alert!

Talk about learning by my mistakes!
My lust for DIY everything has really bitten me this time.
Project moar caster is on hold till further notice, it turns out I dont have quite what it takes to uninstall the WL RCA balljoints from my LCA arms.

I also lacked the forethought to correctly reinstall the reco-ed driveshaft so the Lib is back at A1 getting the seal replaced.
Apparently the trick is to pack the retaining ring all around with grease to locate it concentrically to the driveshaft stub, THEN eyeball the driveshaft seal in the gearbox to correctly align the gap on the ring with, I guess, a keyway in the seal, then align the ring with the exact spline and very carefully slip the driveshaft in. I couldnt even get the driveshaft in all the way, I just put everything back together hoping for the best, which was a torn seal.

My mistake is being corrected at A1, the boss there says to me: "you artist, go take photo, ha ha"... :P
How true, yet I don't regret a thing, not the wasted money, not the hours spent on my back under the car in the rain, the unspeakable frustration and so on, cos I was there, I did it, I learned the hard way.

JK about that last bit
Next time just take the damn thing to Sams or TruTrack and let the experts sort it. You told me so!

Hahahhahha

Sometimes you have to trust a professional..... they are sorta qualified to do the job  .

Your above experience is my exact reason behind not learning to tune my car..... cant afford to blow my new motor up as I will be divorced
Not a Subaru...... Something MUCH better

NOPE..... That's shit too. Bus anyone??

hate to say it but sometimes do it yourself jobs end up costing more cause you fuck shit up then end up paying someone to fix it, this happens lots if youre not mechanically minded and I don't know how that feels ha ha
