Believe me I'm considering it. Might make my 2.5 build easier to decide on too

I just don't get it really. One minute it's working then next minute nothing. If it was the actual ecu I could understand cos if it dies then everything dies. But knowing now that the ecu is ok (confirmed by Tactrix that they bench tested all three ecu's and 100% working when they left), it is doing my head in. Guarantee it'll be something silly like a loose connection, blown fuse or faulty module somewhere.

Just shit trying to diagnose without the car

MY04 Liberty GT - light mods

Postby Gambit » Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:33 pm

Honestly you should not have to go the route of an aftermarket ecu when it could be something really simple yet to be diagnosed. You might wire in a vipec and its still won't work ! who knows. :) Go back to the guy who modded it to back track through their work. It should not be on your hands to sort it....

Youre right gambit

But the bloke who did the work on it is someone I trust . In saying that he too is going up to have a look at it today just in case. And in any case shit happens hopefully it's something small.

Been doing some research and it appears this may be immobliser related - im hoping thats the case and it should be a relatively easy fix by subaru (or auto elec for half the price).

Will keep this thread updated - wish me luck guys

hi Mick

Good luck sorting the ECU.

Spoke to AM Auto about the auto to manual conversion and Miles advised the ONLY way to do it is purchase a front cut with motor dash & gearbox.
Apparently you will need the wiring loom and dash and computer to get it 100%.

MV are the only masters at beefing the 5eat box at this point.....

CURRENT - ATP GTX 3576 - 22psi - 283.7awkw

Mate sorry to say and no offence but theyre giving you a bum steer - this is crap.

The mechanical side of things is very simple bolt in as i said earlier. The electrical side will merely need some rewiring of your existing setup so that the tcu still sends signal to your abs module and allows start up while clutch is in only. Not too hard to do at all.

Why would you need the dash?

After racking my brain all day, trying to sort the car and doing a thousand tests to figure out whats wrong with my ecu, we think we've managed to find the culprit (thanks to young69 as well).

Seems as if its the BIU (Body Integrated Unit module - which is essentially the CAN bus provider for the entire vehicle's electrical system, and within which the immobiliser is integrated), which is blocking any electrical power from reaching the ECU. It appears that this was the original problem and ECU didnt even need to be unbricked at all (waste of 4 weeks).

Will be trying to do some stuff tomorrow to sort it - failing that, the BIU will need to be repalced. From Subaru these are about $2,000 (with two new coded keys), although i may be able to use the one from the recently purchased GTB, hopefully. Will involve removal of the ignition barrel, the BIU itself (large module under the steering column), and then recoding of the key from the donor car.

Ok - update tme !

Found the problem in the car - a bad earth to the ecu from behind the dash !! - Can you believe it?

Yes was one of the first things we asked about but not to worry.

Car is being tuned this afternoon - will update post with results.

Seems like i must eat some humble pie regarding some of my previous comments re certain software

Thanks Anthony - yeah was literally the first thing i asked about when this happened but was told it was ok :?

Seems to be a waste of 5 weeks and $300 now that ecu had to go to the states etc.

All good as long as its sorted lets hope all goes well with the tune then all this can be forgotten.

Great to hear it is sorted. Really looking forward to seeing the results. If it isn't too much to ask would love to see the boost logs from the garrett.

No probs Ian and thank you for the well wishes.

All going well, I will be completing some data logging later this week and will be happy to share the boost logs and any other "non-intellectual property sensitive" data

Ok guys results are in

196kw atw @ 6600rpm at 19psi. Strews slipping at about 5500 so didn't really register a sound number although the tuner did say he was able to tune it above that level even though it was slipping.

Turbo had plenty more in it according to the tuner buy once again the limiting factor was the auto. Exact words were shame it werent a manual otherwise you wouldve cracked 230 to 240. All good I guess gonna take it to the drags as soon as I can and see what she runs.

Feels plenty solid on the road although a significant lag difference between the vf38 and the 2871r. Hen it comes on though (full song about 4000rpm) hang on!

Feels great and pretty happy with the results.

Now the next thing is to get the e85 tune done but don't know if it's worth it with the convertor slipping.
