Vinyl Wrap will be coming off of the car verryyyy soon, I have booked a bunch of stuff in for paint Mid June!

I picked up a new front bar and headlights from Yahoo Auctions in Japan also. Was an absolute steal!

Screenshot 2021-04-07 174915.jpg

The Bar came with a TBSTI Honeycomb Grille and a Genuine STI front lip! The paint on the bar is immaculate and the lip is practically brand new (which is fantastic considering they're no longer being made and cost near $1200 to purchase!!!)
It still has the blue protective film on the STI logo, and I could probably count the scratches under it on one hand.... there are basically none....

The headlights are the JDM factory HID units without the awful headlight washers which I keep losingggg!!!!! They came with K2 Eyelids already finished in 65Z! what a bonus!

So bye bye to the halo headlights I had built last year, another member will be sporting them on a car he has not yet bought

With that I have a couple more smaller projects to go on with, involving composites :)

Screenshot 2021-04-07 174113.jpg

Screenshot 2021-04-07 174147.jpg

I ordered a bunch of 3k 200gsm Carbon Twill (no that isn't all I bought in the photo, there is a 4x1.5m roll also) , Epoxy, pigment and hardener, which I will be using to skin my DAMD style fenders and other parts of the exterior. I will detail the process later in a write up here on
this thread! Super excited to carry through with it, I'm sure it'll be heaps of fun. Hopefully I can achieve some great results. Nice to be focusing on the simpler aesthetic side of modifying cars :D

Hoping to reuse excess for some bits on the interior also :)

Awesome updates!
I’d be interested to see how your crankcase pressure behaves, with the upgrade aos system.
Lmk if you’d like to borrow the modded oil cap.

Are you going for a gloss or matte finish on the carbon?

Maybe at the next health check day!

And it'll be a gloss finish with the Carbon. Will get the resin down to a polished surface and see how well that does before oxidising or fading, if the maintenance isn't
feasible in terms of how often I'll have to cut and polish it, then I'll look at clear coating it later down the track.

Hi Marcus,

What Sealant did you use to seal the headlights when you did them?

Also what LED Halo is that, did you do it yourself or is that a Leo (hks180) job?

Hey mate!

I used just a generic ceramic coat, lasts pretty well for around 6-8 months from what I'm told.

they were built by Alex at iilumo in Victoria :)

New Intercooler

Postby marcus.bspec » Tue Apr 13, 2021 9:27 pm

I thought this information might have been of some use to anyone who might have overlooked it in the past whilst looking for a similar solution.

I currently have installed what I assume is a CX Racing Front Mount intercooler Piping set which I purchased from another member, with a bunch of new Aeroflow couplers and a Fenix "stealth" black core, which I purchased
due to the locations of the inlet and outlet coming off of the end tanks, as well as size and its ability to physically mount underneath the factory crash bar and mitigate unnecessary cutting/trimming of the inside of my front
bumper, particularly near the fog lights, which is where many have encountered issues with Post face cars.

The end tanks on this core allow for the piping to run independently of the fog lights, running underneath them in a cavity within the front bar on Post facelift models.

It was a cheaper solution at the time seeing as all other options for front mount intercoolers were;

1. Priced above $1500
2. Not directly bolt on for the Gen 4 GTB (Trimming of the fog light bezels required, with piping visible externally), Particularly on Post face Spec B's
3. Designed to fit the USDM crash bar and Front bumpers
4. Designed to fit Preface
5. All of the above

It fit near perfectly with the exception of the battery, which was required to be smaller than stock. I was happy to compromise as the JDM plastic covers I had acquired were able to be retained with this setup
and hence, provided the bay with a stealthy, clean appearance. See Page earlier in this thread where I detail the install.

LET THE RESEARCH BEGIN!

I loved the way it was set up previously with the front bar I have wrapped, but this new bumper is near perfect and I really don't want to have to cut out more than the centre piece in the the middle of the bar
to allow free-flow through the core. So I sought out to find a solution.

I remember seeing on a forum post within NASIOC where a member managed to fit a 2008 WRX FMIC kit to his Legacy GT with great success, however the write-up was short and left with broken links to photos and without
mention of the brands of the parts he installed. This had me thinking... could I do the same, within a budget?

There are a few options for the 2008-2011 WRX and STI.

Mishimoto was out of the question due to the size of the core, the price, and also the location of the inlet and outlet on the core.

AVO have a kit but its identical to the LGT.

Perrin and Process West have kits also but they're priced above $2000... Way too expensive for my puss 14 year old wagon...

I noticed that CMA Stock a Hyperflow FMIC for the 2008 - 2011 WRX and STI. I hadn't looked too far into this before, BUT, I saw some things that were of interest and explored further.

1. The kit was $1149, far cheaper than most others
2. It came with a crash bar and a "flipped" intercooler core, with ideal location of the inlet and outlet ports on the end tanks. I have seen a member set their AVO kit up similarly in the past with great results and NO need for cutting of the front bar
3. It comes with a coolant overflow replacement reservoir
4. From photos of it installed, it allows for the stock battery to be retained, which I wanted, considering mine is an Optima unit and cost me a PACKET to purchase last year....
5. It looks very clean, and comes with the correct 2.75" to 2.5" inch reducer section coming out of the throttle-body hose.
6. Comes with piping to suit both the WRX and the STI, useful for anyone looking to go through with a swap retaining the cast long runner manifold.

After a little a little reading, I noticed something...

Screenshot 2021-04-13 202100.jpg (39.1 KiB) Viewed 4577 times

Notice it reads "TurboXS WS08-CAI is required"... So I shot over to the TurboXS website and what do you know, both kits are EXACTLY the same.

TurboXS on the top, Hyperflow underneath

NOW, here's what I was waiting to find. The description reads the following on the TurboXS website. I had since confirmed with a stockist that both Brands had the same manufacturer... I mean it's not that hard to tell but anyway.... See highlighted section here:

Screenshot 2021-04-13 202148.jpg
Screenshot 2021-04-13 202148.jpg (53.23 KiB) Viewed 4577 times

Supposedly it fits the 05-09 Lib/Legacy, which would mean the crash bar bolts up directly... I guess there's only one way to find out, I got my hands on a Hyperflow kit, I will detail the install at a later date and report any issues and post photos which hopefully confirm the initial
hypothesis, which is that the Hyperflow Kit, will fit.

Hopefully it all works, I haven't been able to find any write-ups here regarding a similar finding/issue/solution, so it'd be good to share if it works out.

Sublime content thanks :good:

My faded j-speed carbon scoop loved the 2k clear I used on my headlights, more than a year parked outside in indirect sun.

3 heavy coats painted in situ.

Hyperflow Intercooler + Saying goodbye to Vinyl Wrap

Postby marcus.bspec » Tue Aug 31, 2021 7:31 pm

Well, its been a while. Since Melbourne is in its seemingly never ending 6th Lockdown, and I am as a result bored out of my mind, I thought I would update this thread with a few bits and pieces.

The Car has been through a significant amount of change since I last posted, first up, the new Hyperflow intercooler is now on, and fits great. I did however have to trim the crash support plates
slightly as they were pushing up against the headlight brackets, which would have prevented the bumper from fitting properly.

The kit came with an Alloy Overflow reservoir to be relocated to the left of the original for easier passage of the cooler piping.

Managed to pick up a set of Rhino RPV06 Roof racks from a fellow member based in SA, as well as a Thule Atlantis 780 Roof pod, which I'd been looking out for in case we ever get let
out again and I can drive out to whoop whoop for an impromptu get away/camping trip.

Below is the last photo I had on hand before I decided to lay waste to my vinyl wrap job completed during Melbournes first lockdown in 2020.

I removed the Rays 57Transcend's and dropped them off to be repaired and refinished, and then dropped off a spare bonnet, the Liberal Wing and Factory Aero Pods for Paint.

Then, off came the vinyl...

It was good until it wasn't... Just joking, it genunely held up incredibly well, I was just over the dull, orange peely finish it presented. Paint looks far better.

Carbon Fibre Skinning + Parts back from Paint

Postby marcus.bspec » Tue Aug 31, 2021 7:43 pm

So I mentioned previously I'd be skinning the DAMD Style fenders in Carbon Fibre - As a test, I skinned the faded surface of the Tailgate Garnish on the Lib. I dont have too many photos of the process, but I figured
I'd save you the boredom and just explain. Essentially the surface of the Garnish was blocked back/abraided to help a base coat of resin adhere to it, over which a 2k Carbon Weave was layed, and subsiquently coated with
layer upon layer of resin, creating both a chemical and physical bond between layers. Here is the result -

Screenshot 2021-08-31 193308.jpg
Screenshot 2021-08-31 193308.jpg (86.89 KiB) Viewed 3702 times

Came up fantastic with a coat of clear, and then a buff and polish. Great alternative to painting the fading surface. Cheaper too.

I did make a few mistakes, namely burning/sanding through the weave when adding material, exposing the surface underneath. I digress, this was a test, which I will probably redo at some point in the future.

Otherwise, I was enjoying the car being back to paint. even with the horrid stock wing, and faded bonnet, it looked fantastic on these loaned Enkei RS05 Wheels, which I borrowed as rollers -

Bits back from Paint + Wheels

Postby marcus.bspec » Tue Aug 31, 2021 8:00 pm

I finally picked up the Bonnet, Wing, Pods and Wheels back from Paint. The wheels were wrapped in a TOYO C1S 255/35R18 Tyre, yes 255 again, for a near perfect fit.

I had the wheels finished in a non-factory colour, metallic silver... by this I mean the Transcends were never offered in Silver from Rays... How ridiculous right? I am very pleased with my choice, the sparkle in the sunlight in unreal...

Needless to say I was excited at this point. threw all of the bits and pieces onto the car and here's how it all looks

The colour match was pretty bang on, car needs a good cut and polish now to really make it shine. Also may need to call upon someone in the field of PDR to help out with a few problem areas... when I can be bothered of course

Carbon Skinning the Fenders

Postby marcus.bspec » Tue Aug 31, 2021 8:06 pm

So I began skinning the Fenders, Same process as the Tailgate, but far more tedious.

I am now in the process of repairing small mistakes, and prepping the surface for another coat of resin.

Here's how they look currently -

Screenshot 2021-08-31 200230.jpg
Screenshot 2021-08-31 200230.jpg (46.45 KiB) Viewed 3701 times

Took a couple more photos this time. Here are a few of the process at various stages -

1- Black Epoxy Base Coat // Essentially laying a tacky surface coat for the carbon to adhere to.

2 - Lay Carbon over

3 - Add resin over top

Mind blowing!
The roof box is simply majestic :good:

Is it difficult to put on and take off?
Does your garage have clearance to hide it up in the rafters, eg slings & pulley system?

Thanks Benny!

It's not difficult to put on/take off, though much easier with two people. Also Its leaned up against a wall for the time being, Garage would be just tall enough to suspend it from the ceiling, not up behind the rafters unfortunately, ceiling is plasterboard

I’m pining for another subie but it’s still not the right time, so good you found yours!

Is this because the GT is too good to daily?
