Please move to Walkthrough's: Replacing Tailgate Chrome Bar

Postby N8Bain » Sat Nov 30, 2013 7:19 pm

After many searches both on here and around the web I was unable to find any information on how to remove the chrome bar on the rear of post face lift Gen IV wagons. After spending a few hours figuring it out for myself I thought I'd take a few photos to show how its done. I'd started to piece the tailgate back together by the time I decided to do this so, there aren't many photos towards the end - i'll do my best to explain.

If your looking at this you probably know what you are about to replace but for those who don't.

STEP 1:
Remove the interior panel on either side of the rear windscreen. Do to this simply get a firm grip and pull the panel away. You will hear a few clips come free and may need to fiddle with the upper end of the panel to remove it.

STEP 2:
The clip shown here will now be exposed. Remove both clips (one either side of the windscreen). These clip are quite difficult to remove, just be patient and slowly pry them out, begining with a small flathead screwdriver.

STEP 3:
Now there are four more of these clips to be removed from the base of the interior trim panel. They are located under the rubber weather guard, in approximately the locations marked.

STEP 4:
Pry open the little flap in the handle used to lower the tailgate to expose the two screws shown here. Remove these two screws

STEP 5:
The entire interior trim panel on the lower half of the tailgate can now be removed. There are five clips on the upper side of the panel (near the rear windscreen) which simply pop out when you start to pull the panel away. Again be patient and start from one side, working towards the other. Sorry no photo here.

STEP 6:
Now remove this panel from either side of the tailgate. To do this, remove the screw/clip from the upper end and then pry it away from another two clips which you will hear pop out.

STEP 7:
There will now be two 8mm washer nuts exposed under each of these panels (four in total). If you look at the rest of the tailgate that was exposed by removing the large interior trim panel you will notice another seven (from memory?) of these washer/nuts. Remove all of these washer/nuts. You will need a socket, ratchet and extension bar to get at some of them.

STEP 8:
Disconnect the wires to the reverse and the number plate lights.

STEP 9:
Remove the exterior, upper panel of the tailgate. You may need to push on some of the bolts that you removed the washer/nuts from to get it started.

STEP 10:
With the upper exterior panel now free, you can remove the chrome bar by unscrewing five screws along its length.

STEP 11:
Re-Assemble!

The completed product (excuse the dust).

If you need further instructions, ask and i'll do my best to explain this further. I won't be venturing back in there any time soon so won't be able to get any more photos.
Goodluck!

Hi Nate,

Can you please post some more photos of the end result? Did you paint the strip in matte/satin black?

I was thinking of colour coding mine with the rest of the car (so it looks more like the original Gen4 wagon boot) but am interested to see how matte/satin black looks!

Cheers

I'll put some photos up tomorrow. I'll give it a good wash around christmas and take some proper photos (not with the phone), if you want to wait.

The bar has been wrapped in a matte/satin vinyl wrap. I bought it off another forum member on here, and I believe he bought it off someone else and didn't end up using it. Someone did a very good job of it, I wouldn't have the patience/skill. I think it looks good, but might have to tint the reverse lights now...

Cheers!
