AVO air-box insulation

i didn't know where to stick this because i don't know how it's gonna pan out at this stage so .... here it is.
i, along with some others bought an AVO cold air box a while ago.
i always thought it could benefit from some insulation so i had a crack...
i bought a brand new shiny sun visor thingy, did some measurements, cut a bit and went silly with the clear silicone and this is the result....

Great work Adam! You didn't happen to take before and after temperature readings did you? Meh. Even if it only netted you 0.3 kw it looked like a fun project.

Just one question:

Does the material insulate by having air pockets or fibre as well as reflect?

Reflective foil is great for insulating against radiation, but I'd suggest the main way heat is transferred into the air box is conduction.

I agree with Coyote. I would have glued the material to the outside of the airbox.

Clarkes rubber sell a heat reflective product with a foam backing. I used it to make up a makeshift box for my rex once. Worked a treat.

Not my pic or installation. But you get the idea. It should be on the outside.




You could go for a thrash and when you put your hand into the airbox. You could not feel any radiated heat from the engine and surrounds.

You didn't happen to take before and after temperature readings did you?

no, but after a 1hr drive today of which 25mins was on the M2 i took a look so i could see if it was about to catch fire or not. there was a large "touch temp" variance between the bits outside(ouchy!) and inside (bit warm).

there's a fibreglass lid that i've also stuck some of the material to.

any quieter with that insulation on it?

it sounds a bit quieter, more muffled.... i think, it was a bit hard to tell with 3 kids in the car.

it has some pockets a bit like bubble wrap with tin foil on both sides..
it's ~2-3mm thick?

I Wish i had have know that before. i looked all over for the right stuff. if it ends up not being thick enough i'll just stick on another layer.
as i mentioned before it's shiny on both sides so it should work, at least a bit.

where can i buy an air box? i made up an intake but need to seperate it from the main engine area as suckin in hot air.

ok cheers. avo are charging $264 for the airbox. And that doesnt include intake pipes of filter or 02 sensor mount or anything else. I have access to a laser cutter and brake presses as im a fitter and turner and if someone can measure up there airbox and post the dimentions i reckon i could could produce these in bulk for alot cheaper.
