I'm away for a couple of weeks

Postby Ric » Sat Oct 21, 2006 10:58 pm

....driving around South Australia, so will only have occasional Internet access. I've setup a mystery moderator to look after Usergroup approvals in my absence. Apart from that he/she will keep a low profile ;)

Woohoo, I'm online finally :D
We're in Port Augusta, 32 degrees today...
It took a phone call to Bigpond to sort out why my dialup wasn't working.
(Haven't used it for a year, and they changed the username format in the meantime :? )

Good old Telstra,
you need a CDMA wireless card like me. Internet anywhere that there's mobile coverage, and the best part is that work pays for it!

What's coverage like in outback SA? :)
I have a BIGPOND unlimited dialup account, which gives me a local call from anywhere in Australia, just hadn't bothered using it for over a year.
I knew I should have tested it before leaving home...

Ha, good point, coverage in the outback is probably shocking. I'm in Swan Hll at the moment and it's slow as..... If the tower is 3G enabled then it's not bad, but otherwise it's pretty much like a dial up connection or worse.
but it's better than nothing, and it costs me nothing. Basically it works on the Tel$tra CDMA network so wherever you get coverage on that you can get on. In most towns it's okay, but when you're out in the middle of nowhere it's no good, but unless you can find a phone line, so's a dialup account.
I'm not even sure how much this thing costs, work just gave it to me, so I didn't complain, certainly makes things easy when you're traveling a lot like I do.

Sounds like you guys need to hookup with the telstra NEXTG network.

hook your mobile into your laptop - wireless (suposedly to 96% of Australians) ADSL speeds.

changed phone & plan last week to next G very impressive. Will even fiind WiFi networks and if you can log-in you can connect to the net via WiFi free.
